Is it all just semantics?

Sometimes I think that Prime Minister Harper is a smart guy. Sometimes not so much.

At times he seems to be a smart, shrewd politician who is doing what he thinks he must do to win the next election. He also seems to really believe that a majority government is a mathematical possibility. The fact that I almost universally disagree with his policies AND on the idea that a majority is possible or even desirable is not the point.

At other times, I can’t believe what I hear coming out of his mouth, and I think, “Could it be possible that he really believes this load of crap?”

Check out this video clip…

… they’re concerned about the perceived effects over time of the environment on their health, and the health of their children and grandchildren. So these are the things we’re trying to address. You know, we did a focus when we did the clean air act and as we implement our clean air agenda. The focus is a little different than the other parties. They focus only on so-called greenhouse gases…

The national media picked up this news conference and a lot of people in a lot of other blogs have been focusing on the phrase “so-called greenhouse gases.”
Personally, this one didn’t bother me much because I’m convinced that Harper still does not believe in the science or doesn’t really care, having his head buried in the oil sands.

But “perceived effects?” This one just makes my blood boil.

Seriously, does Harper perceive that the human condition is so separated from the environment that the environment does not affect our health and that of future generations?

Could he really be that obtuse?

I really can’t decide. Does he really believe what he is saying or is it part of a shrewd political game that I just don’t get? Someone please advise.

And for the record Mr Harper, no, the other parties are not focussed only on so-called greenhouse gases, or have you forgotten about the Green Party yet again? I really can’t wait for Elizabeth to be on TV debating this competition.
