Security and Prosperity for whom?

What do you know of the “Security and Prosperity Partnership”?

Many political bloggers who read this through ProgressiveBloggers and other aggregator sites will know all about it, but I’m willing to bet that most of the general public do not. Call it “NAFTA on Steroids.”

Well, it would definitely be in your best interests to google “SPP” and find out what it’s all about, because it’s moving full steam ahead, coming to a country near you, and I’d be willing to bet that unless you are part of the corporate and political elite that is pushing for this, you won’t like the results.

Part of the problem, of course, is that the entire discussion is taking place behind closed doors, under the radar, whatever you want to call these negotiations which are not open to public scrutiny. All between multinational corporations and senior bureaucrats.

And what has been seen is a move toward integrating trade and economic policy between Canada, the US and Mexico, choosing the lowest common denominator when it comes to environmental and human rights laws.

Nothing less is at stake than our sovereignty, control of our currency and economy, control of our environmental laws, control of our human rights laws, control of our foreign policy, control of our fresh water, the list goes on and on.

The Green Party is active in opposing SPP. Front and centre on this effort is Dr Janet Eaton, our Shadow Cabinet representative for International Trade. You can find a few links here to get you started.

SPP. Google it. You are right to be concerned.

Does it not interfere with our Constitution or the fact that we have a Monarchy? Would not that be considered Treason on Harper’s part?

Good question, but I don’t think so.

I’m not sure what the precedent would be for the Crown, through the Governor General, to not approve of the actions of parliament. There must be something at some point, but I suspect its been a long time since the Crown has interfered.

But hey, it might be an idea worth exploring with a constitutional lawyer.

I saw Lou Dobbs on CNN one night and he seemed quite concerned about this and said something about their Constitution , also.

I would not worry too much about U.S. constitutional issues, if they want this they will get it passed somehow.

It’s not constitutional to go to war without a declaration by the house.
they have

It’s not constitutional to wire tap without court orders.
they do

It’s not constitutional to charge income tax or allow a private organization (the fed) to control the money supply.
they have for 1/2 of their existence.

Constitutionaly Fiat money is illegal.

The U.S. has been cherry picking which parts of it’s constitution they want to honour for a long time. I have little faith of a legal opposition wining.

Now many U.S. states are passing resolutions against SPP, and Texas has shut down work on the NA super highway for the time being but this at best is a delaying strategy, unless everyone gets off their asses and makes noise.

Lou Dobbs is a strong U.S. voice against it, I wish we had some strong media voice that would take up the cause
