Telecommuting

I’m telecommuting today. And in my mind, this is the way of the future for those whose job function can accomodate it.

I know, I know, people have been saying that for years and it hasn’t become widespread. But frankly, the technology just wasn’t there. It’s wasn’t so many years ago that even people living in urban centres had dial-up internet access, and many people still do, particularly our rural friends.

macbookThings have changed. But for the most part, the corporate world has not yet caught up. People stil think that if they can’t see you in your cubicle, you’re not working.  (As if to say you are working if you are sitting in your cubicle!)

So today, here I sit with my trusty macbook, where I can log in to my corporate server and though a secure connection I can call up windows with software running in Edmonton and not tell the difference between this and being at the office.  And the important bit is that other’s can’t tell either.

All the same functionality. And I get to avoid 3 hours of commuting time. Brilliant!

Just like with politics, the internet is changing everything.
