While the environmental movement usually refers to “the oil industry”, implying that all oil & gas companies are the same (executives are evil, revenue and share price are king, the environment is an inconvenient hurdle to be overcome), it should be noted that not all of the companies within that industry are complete luddites.
[Note that I am referring to the corporations here, not all the people who work for these companies.]
Some companies are moving forward with alternative fuels and showing stronger environmental awareness than you have come to expect. Not that I think many of all of these efforts will turn out to be viable (ethanol vs food, hydrogen, etc) but at least they are putting some of those profits into research. For example:
Shell - whose CEO has actually stated that the the debate on climate change is over.
BP – whose CEO was featured in Vanity Fair’s first Green Issue as one of the people to watch with regards to the environment.
Talisman – a Canadian oil & gas producer getting into European wind power. (Yes, Talisman has some questionable past practices on their resume, but this one effort at least is laudable.)
Of course, not everyone is on board. (This article may be almost a year old, but I’ve not found any evidence that much has changed.)
I can just hear Grover singing the song. “One of these thing is not like the others, one of these things does not belong…..”
