As I went knocking on a few doors last night, I had an interesting talk with a couple who live not too far away, and took more time than typical since I was due to go home for the night.
The man said, “I wish you luck, but I won’t vote for you. I don’t need some left wing party taxing the hell out of me.”
So of course I had to respond, “Yeah, I know what you mean, I’d hate for that result too.”
This must have been enough to peak his curiosity, since he said, “Well then why do you represent the Green Party?”
An excellent question and set up, allowing me to have a 10 minute conversation with the couple about what the Green Party stands for, how the Conservatives call us left wing, how the NDP calls us right wing, and how the media doesn’t quite know where to put us on the spectrum.
I’m not convinced that I managed to sway those two voters. But I could tell by the end that they are now a bit Green curious, and I gave them some food for thought.
This just convinces me even more that the Green Party has an awful lot of appeal for Progressive Conservatives whose party no longer exists.
Perhaps having Stephen Harper and Jack Layton on the news every day calling us left wing and right wing respectively is a good thing. It opens the door for us to explain that they both have it wrong.
