Photo Challenge 3 – Blue

Lots of great entries for the latest photo challenge! The theme was BLUE (chosen by Donna Williamson, winner of Theme #1) and I’m predicting a close race!

Those who entered, please vote for your first and second choice.

For anyone else, welcome! We’d love to hear your comments and your favourites as well, as your votes might determine the tie-breaker.

And now a new rule for voting… Voting will close in 1 week or as soon as all the entrants have voted, whichever is sooner.  I’ll update the post then with all of the names and other photo details that were sent to me.

Theme #4 is BLACK & WHITE, set by Jeannie Gane who was the winner of Theme #2.  Be sure to check out the Rules post before you submit a photo, as I’ll be updating it in the next day or so. You’ll risk getting your photo rejected in future if you don’t stick to the rules and it makes more work for me. Photo’s for Theme #4 are due Wednesday September 1 by 7:00 pm.

UPDATE Aug 25: The winner for Photo Challenge 3 is Donna Williamson with PEI Blue Mussels! Congrats Donna! There are no prizes, LOL! Donna will be choosing Theme #5, which will be revealed when all the pics from Theme 4 are posted. I’ve also updated the gallery below to include all the photographer names, so if you have any questions about how the shots were taken, please join the conversation!

1) Fantasia
2) Blue plate special.
Loved the way the (I think it’s food dye reacts to the water) and how the patterns of the stacked plates look together. I also really liked “Comfortably Worn” and “Spirit in a Bottle.”

MollieAugust 19, 2010 - 2:43 am

Whoops! Don’t vote yet, Glenn just added one more photo! ;o)

Glenn HubbersAugust 19, 2010 - 2:43 am

Hey Karen, there’s one more photo added if you want to revote.

Glenn HubbersAugust 19, 2010 - 3:19 am

Wow, what a lot of great pics! Here are my votes and feedback…

First place goes to PEI Blue Mussels. Excellent colour & composition, this would make a great stock photo. I could picture this being used in a PEI advertisement!

Second place goes to Comfortably Worn. I like the well thought out composition and all the straight lines, and all the angles they make with the sides of the frame.

And just to mention a couple of the others…

Honourable mention to Fantasia for creativity. It was the first photo submitted and really made me think I had to step up my game with my own pic!

Blue Plate Special is excellent. I’m wondering if you took multiple shots with different compositions, and I’d be curious to see the set to see if any of the others appealed even more.

Bagged. Now that’s just creepy! An excellent idea, the only suggestion I’d have is to get a different bag or turn the head so the writing is not visible.

Fruits of Summer has an excellent use of depth of field.

Spirit in a Bottle is one that catches the eye at thumbnail size just due to the few colours used, and then is a real surprise at full size! I really like the image, but I think it could benefit from losing the daisy which I find distracts from the real subject, and perhaps setting your focus on the “spirit” rather than the “bottle.”

Nice work, all!

First Place: Blue Plate Special
I like the colour and the varying depth of the plates. Great pic!

Second Place: At Rest
I love the shade of blue and I like that you can still see the grain in the wood. Had the background simply been a blue screen, I would not have enjoyed it as much.

Originally I wanted to have 3 second place votes, but I have to learn to be decisive. With that said, honourable mention goes to…

1) Spirit in a Bottle
2) Fruits of Summer

My First choice is; “PEI Blue Mussels”
My Second choice is; “Fruits of Summer” (I “LOVE” blueberries!)

MollieAugust 19, 2010 - 2:03 pm

Hmmm… this time my first choice was easy because I totally fell in LOVE with PEI Blue Mussels! 2nd choice is very difficult… so…

1st- PEI Blue Mussels. I love the natural blue on the red/orange rock. Excellent use of contrasting colours to make everything pop! I would like to have this framed on my wall, please! ;o)

2nd- At Rest. First of all, the subject-matter pleases me… hello, gorgeous shoes! But really, I love the sharpness of the shiny black and silver against the blue wood-grain floor. (Blue floor is photo-shopped, I assume!) It’s a simple photo really, but with “blue” as the theme, the photographer adjusted the floor to be blue, and voila! The simple photo has a new mood.

A very close 3rd was Blue Plate Special. Love the angles and texture of the plates. Again, a simple photo of everyday items becomes very artistic!

Also, a comment on portrait photos… I like the idea of My Blue Eyed Baby, however, I have learned that the most important thing when photographing people (animals, too) is to set the focus on the eyes. Her eyes are not as sharp in focus as I would like. Also, may I suggest a slightly different light since there is a bit of shine on her skin. Glenn bought a device called a “puffer” (it mounts in front of the flash) that diffuses the light for just such a portrait photo and the difference is incredible!

Way to go all, very creative!!!

1) PEI Blue Mussels
2) Fruits of Summer

Maddy HubbersAugust 19, 2010 - 5:04 pm

My first vote would be “At Rest” I love the colours, blue and black is always a good combo!

And my second choice is definitely PEI Blue Mussels, the contrast between the blue of the mussels and the red of the stone is perfect!

Glenn HubbersAugust 19, 2010 - 5:13 pm

Just an addition to something Mollie said. The http://www.garyfongestore.com/“ rel=”nofollow”>puffer is from Gary Fong who makes a wide variety of these diffusers for various flash units. The one I got retails for about $30 and fits onto your hot shoe to diffuse the light from the built in flash, but there are others of varying sizes (and prices) for speedlights, etc. It’s pretty cool, works well enough, and is a good way to avoid dropping a couple hundred bucks or more on a flash until you know exactly what you want. I still plan to get a bigger flash, but I want one that I can use off camera as well based on the Nikon Creative Lighting System, which I am just starting to investigate. :-)

All great shots.. My preferences are:
1 – Blue plate special
2 – Virginia Blue Sky

JeannieAugust 19, 2010 - 7:22 pm

My top two choices are:

1) PEI Blue Mussels – love the contrast against the red island sand

2) Virginia Blue Sky – love the colours in this one. Stunning!

My honourable mention is Spirit in the Bottle because the Geni … ummm … Spirit is way cool!

It is interesting to me how some of the photo’s are set up and how I would have done them differently although they are still great the way they are! I would like to see other shots of the Blue Plate Special. I love how the front bluberries are in focus in Fruits of Summer but I would have tried to centre or crop the fruit box. The Red, White and Blues shot makes my mouth water. My first thought with it was if the photographer had tried tipping the strainer on it’s side? Comfortably Worn is similar to a shot I tried to get that was not nearly as successful! :-)

Good job everyone!

First choice: Blue Plate Special
Second choice: Virginia Blue Sky

DonnaAugust 20, 2010 - 1:01 am

Wow, really creative pictures this time.
My first choice is My Blue Eyed Baby. There is something about this picture that really draws my attention. I think the fact that her face is the focus with the blue scarf and the background is out of focus makes it so appealing.
My second choice is Fruits of Summer. Again love the focus on the front choice.
I agree with Glenn – bagged is just plain scary. What a neat idea.

KarenAugust 20, 2010 - 9:23 pm

Revote!! Lots of amazing pics but…

1) Fantasia (very cool idea)
2) At Rest (subject and the colour/lighting were awesome)

Honorable mentions to Blue Plate Special and Spirit in a Bottle.

Dana (help from Karen)August 20, 2010 - 9:30 pm

Even though Dana can’t vote, she wanted to share her opinion :)

1) Virginia Blue Sky
2) Spirit in a Bottle

Honorable Mentions:

Blue Plate Special and My Blue Eyed Baby

KristaAugust 20, 2010 - 10:53 pm

1) Virginia Blue Sky
love love love the colours
2) At Rest
this makes me want to go out dancing! FUN!!!

Marie BridelAugust 22, 2010 - 4:01 am

First place for me goes to “Comfortably Worn”…I LOVE blue jeans, and love the comfort of them, so the title won me over too.
Second place goes to Blue Jay…MY TEAM! lol

KateAugust 22, 2010 - 12:15 pm

1st place: Blue Plate Special. The colours, texture and composition are fabulous.

2nd place: Comfortably Worn. Again, composition and textures are great.

I’d love to have both of these framed and hanging on my wall.

PS: I thought Bagged was creative, and I particularly like that the warning label (writing) was included. A tad outrageous, and clever.

Photo Challenge 4 – BlacSeptember 13, 2010 - 2:54 pm

[...] Lastly, the theme for Challenge #5 is “BIRD“, set by Donna Williamson who was the winner in Challenge #3. [...]
