It must be a sign of the busy holiday prep season that no one has been pestering me to post the latest challenge pics. This latest challenge was SILHOUETTES and we have some interesting entries to choose from.
View the photos in the gallery here.
The next challenge is NUMBERS chosen by Wendy Taylor.
Submissions are due on Sunday January 15 at 7:00 pm EST.
Let’s all encourage some new friends to join in for this round, shall we?
Okay, now enjoy the pics! And remember…
“Don’t just take pictures, make pictures!”
UPDATE: January 25, 2012
The first place entry for this challenge was Tree Line, by yours truly. For the record and since people made comments about the colour of the sky, I took this photo at night and the colour came out as I played with exposure and white balance settings in Aperture. I also cropped just a little.
The second place entry was Sufferin’ Sassafras by Kate Potter.
And coming in third was Lands End, by Lisa Bourgault.
Congrats and thanks to all the participants. We look forward to your entries on future challenges!

Beautiful entries!!! I don’t think I’m eligible to vote but I’ll give you my tuppence anyway
#1 ~ Margaret, I’m not sure which part of your photo draws me in most…is it the statue(s)…is it the solitude of the beach, or is it the wonderful play of light among the clouds? I love, love, love it!!!
#2 ~ Glenn, “Tree Line” is gorgeous. The vivid colour of the background is the perfect backdrop for the silhouette of the trees! Beautiful!!!
#3 ~ I’m torn…these are really lovely pics. I’d hang any one of them on my wall! Tough choice but I’m going to go with “Trot On”. Jeannie, I can almost feel myself standing at the window and absently running my hand across the back of the horse as I gaze out.
Glad to see the Photo Challenge running again! Amazing photos this week!
@Kelly, there’s an easy way to be eligible to vote. Try submitting a photo! “Numbers” is due Wednesday December 14!
ha! can’t EVER find a camera at my house- but still Love Donna’s pic!
OK! I’m on it!
1. Tree Line – Love the colour and contrast
2. Trot On – I love the sharpness in this picture. And how the trees in the background make the horse look like he is on the ground .. neat!
3. I was stuck between Circle Silouette and Sufferin Sassafras for third.
Sufferin Sassafras ended up getting my vote in the end. I love tree silouettes this time of year. It feels so desolate and lonely. I love the black against the almost white sky and the jagged ground level makes it interesting to the eye.
I found this to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I couldn’t get the crispness I desired. Many of you were successful in this – great submissions.
1. Tree line. Clarity, colour, emotion, cropping …. stunning
2. Land’s End. Same comments.
3. Circle Sillouette. This was a tie with Trot On, but won due to the unusual subject.
Margaret, I absolutely loved “Another Place”, but I didn’t select it only because it didn’t seem to be “on theme” as much as the other submissions. Beautiful shot.
I agree Kate – I thought it would be much easier than it was. You really had to time the picture and get the settings correct to capture the contrast.
1. Sufferin Sassafras – what I really thought when I heard Silouette
2. Tree Line – loved the colour and clarity of the picture
3. Land’s End – another beautiful picture
1. Tree Line – love the effect of the tree silhouetted against the coloured sky
2. Sufferin Sassafrass – lovely effect Kate, I feel like I am walking under the tree.
3. Land’s End – beautiful shot Lisa!
I too found this challenge harder than anticipated. Mainly because I had so many ideas and the conditions and/or timing would not cooperate!
Perhaps we will have a 2nd silhouette theme in the future!
Hey all. Two people have written me email that their browsers are giving them a virus warning when they are trying to load my site. I haven’t seen this at home or at work using IE9, Firefox or Safari. If you see any signs of this, please drop me a line as I’m trying to figure out what the heck that is about. I may be delaying any future posts till I can make sure my site is clean…
I have had no messages or issues! Just thought I would let you know.
No probs from my end.
1. trot on
2. tree line
3. safferin sassafras
and yes when logged on tonight got virus warning.
I just did a McAfee check on your site, and it did not detect any problems. Wed. Dec. 14, 7:58 am.
Glenn: Are we taking a Christmas vacation from the photo challenge???
@Kate, there are still at least two people reporting virus problems from the site and unable to vote. Im holding on further updates till I get that problem resolved and, what with the busy Xmas season, I have not had any time to sit in front of my computer for any extended period.
ok thanks glenn. thnks for the update. Seasonal salutations & new year jubilations to everyone!!!! K8
Hi, I didn’t vote on this because I’ve only just managed to get the page up to do it! I was on holiday in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, and assumed it was something to do with using an internet cafe with old versions of software but when I got home I had the same problem. Earlier today when I tried, my system hung while I was trying to get to this page. I didn’t get any virus warnings and I’ve got really good software for that.
If I’d been able to vote it would have been:
1. Circle Silhouette – I like the abstract nature of this. I think it shows a good eye for a different angle.
2. Lands End – I liked this but thought the boat was almost a distraction. I’m a believer in the “Golden Rule” and having the focal point where the “thirds” of the picture intersect. With this, my eye kept flicking from the hole in the rock to the boat and back again.
3. Trot On – I love the way you’ve got the light playing around his jaw and on his back but I wanted his tail in the pic too.
Beautiful entries!!!
1. Circle Silhouette
2. Trot On
3. Sufferin Sassafras
So after a whole bunch of searching I haven’t been able to find any sign of a virus or trojan that people are reporting. My latest attempt was to contact my hosting service to enlist their help. They have scanned the site with their software and declared it clear. If anyone is still experiencing a problem let me know, but otherwise I’ll be moving on since I can’t really fix a problem that I can’t recreate.
Now, as for my votes…
1- Lands End – Perhaps I’m being influenced, but this one kind of reminds me of my own entry in the Skylines theme.
2- Trot On – Very nice. I am a little curious about your decision to not include the horses tail, though.
3- Sufferin Sassafras – I like the stark B&W of this photo. I would recommend editing out the slight vignette at the top right.
Chees All! After me there are still 5 eligible votes (Mollie, Lisa, Stephanie, Richard & Peter), so I’ll send a reminder email to that group and give them a day or two.
If you haven’t got a Numbers pic in yet, I’ll declare it Not Too Late! Given the delays over the holidays I’ll take some late entries up to the time that I do the post.
PS: While investigating this supposed virus problem, I also updated WordPress to the latest version which caused my lightbox effect to no longer work. Sorry for the inconvenience…
Glenn, Just so you know today I finally got onto your site after hitting virus warnings for the last while. It seems to me either your host site or the upgrade has fixed the problem you had. YIPEE!!!!
Hi gang,
Let me get my votes in quickly before the deadline passes! Everyone did a great job, so congrats go out to all.
#1… Circle Silhouette. Creative, attractive, interesting. I loved it!
#2… Sufferin Sassafras. Great emotion and composition. Well done, Kate.
#3… Trot On. Interesting juxtaposition of trees and statue. Very cool.
I’ve given up on getting to your site on my laptop, Glenn, but fortunately my iPad doesn’t object. Maybe I’ll try my old laptop (with different security s/w) and see if I can get on that way.
Cheers, everyone. It’s good to be back in the Hubbers Challenge swing again!
Well, damn it all to hell. I have continued to get reports of a virus/trojan. And even my hosting server cant find it.
Thats the bad news. The good news is that I have a plan which is already underway. Im moving my site to a new platform.
The goal will be to have that done by the en of the weekend, at least good enough to post new stuff even if all the styling still needs work.
Stay tuned, and thanks for your patience.
In meantime, we have too few pics for the Numbers theme, so lets all encourage all our friends to get in a last minute entry!
