Conversation with random strangers

September 5th, 2007

During a whirlwind tour to Canada’s east coast, I had a very amusing conversation with a random stranger (RS).

Mollie and I were attending a wedding for close friends in Bouctouche, New Brunswick on the Friday of Labour Day weekend. We considered our transport alternatives including flying and VIA Rail, but in the end loaded up the car complete with our bicycles on the roof and headed east. Our intention had been three nights in NB and then two nights in Quebec City on the way back, since neither of us had been there, and we took the bikes to explore the local sights.

Plans have a way of changing and we ended up visiting friends in Malay’s Falls, Nova Scotia, which just happens to be in Elizabeth May’s riding of Central Nova. From there we headed back through PEI, had dinner in Charlottetown, and continued north-east through New Brunswick.

Nearing the New Brunswick – Quebec border, I decided to text message my brother-in-law for a restaurant suggestion in Quebec City, where we planned to stay the night. Unfortunately I didn’t have his phone number correct, so I found myself talking to a random stranger. It went something like this….

Me: Staying in Old Quebec tonight. Any food recommendations?

RS: The most disgusting thing you can find.

RS: Who is this?

Me: It’s Glenn and Mollie. Sorry, I thought you had my cell number.

RS: At this point I should be surprised, but I am sorry to say I think you have the wrong number.

Me: Oh. So sorry! Have a nice day!

RS: Not a problem. But I would recommend Restaurant La Caravelle if you have a taste for French, Spanish and Italian Cuisine.

Me: Thank you, random person!

RS: Names Aaron, and I wish you well on the rest of your day Glenn and Mollie.

We had a good long laugh about all this and the menu for La Caravelle looked interesting, though we did pick another restaurant in the end.

Thanks, Aaron, whoever you are, for being courteous to strangers with the wrong number.
